War Memorials – WW2 Book of Remembrance

After WW2, many communities throughout the country added the names of their fallen to their existing Great War memorials. In the Borough of Epsom & Ewell, however, it was decided not to add another 342 names from WW2 (and, as discussed below, many more have been tracked down subsequently) to the 265 names from WW1 already on the Ashley Road Memorial. (And those WW1 names were from Epsom only: the then separately-administered Ewell erected its own WW1 memorial at the Dipping Well.)

Instead, it was decided to produce a “BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE” listing the people of the Borough who had been killed – including civilians killed by “enemy action” in air raids etc. In 1948, Council staff drew up a draft list of casualties and issued it for consultation, in the light of which some further names were added. The resulting 342 were sent off to the calligrapher and bookbinder and the Book was formally dedicated.

More details of the Book and its display, followed by images of its 21 calligraphed pages, begin a few paragraphs below. Clicking on any of the 342 names on those pages will lead directly to the currently available information about the individual, without going through the alphabetical indexes (which cover another 287 casualties) mentioned just below.

Later research and approaches from bereaved families added another 117 service and civilian names to those listed in the Book. These included a fair number of individuals not resident in the Borough but who, following injury by “enemy action”, were brought to Horton Emergency Hospital – one of Epsom’s cluster of mental hospitals that, as for WW1, had been taken over for dealing with wartime casualties – and died there.

In early 2018, a search of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s now-electronic database added yet another 170 previously undiscovered Borough-related WW2 fatalities – taking the current total to 629.

ALL these individuals are listed on the A to Z pages (by surname) accessed via these links.

Clicking on any of the names in the alphabetical index at the top of each of those pages will lead to more information about the individual. (The asterisk at the end of some of the indexed names marks those not in the Book of Remembrance.)

Please contact us if you can provide information or pictures to extend any of the entries.

The Borough’s BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE may be viewed in its specially made display cabinet in the Information Centre of the Town Hall. Under the protection of glass, a different page is shown each week.

The Book of Remembrance Display Case

On the wall above the display case is a wooden plaque that records the names of the 12 Council staff who died as a result of the war, some of whom are also recorded in the Book of Remembrance. Alongside that plaque is a short piece of framed text giving a very brief summary of events in the Borough in war time. A transcript of that text may be viewed by clicking here.

The Book’s 21 calligraphed pages are reproduced below. Clicking on any the names listed there will lead directly to the currently available information about the individual.
