| Details of 1911 Proprietor | Born 1873 Shipton Gorge, Dorset. Married 1905 Alice Margaret Strudwick, 1882-1948. Alice’s father, John Strudwick was the manager of ‘The Cave’ in the 1901 census.
Children – Philip Conway (1912-25); Frances Craig (1916-98), married Albert E Badrick; John Conway (1919-41). John was an Able Seaman in the Submarine Service and was among the crew of H31, which disappeared with all hands in the Bay of Biscay on Christmas Eve 1941 (cause unknown but general opinion is that she was mined). In the 1901 census Alfred was an insurance agent for the Prudential, boarding in Ashtead, although he was described as a shoemaker on his 1905 marriage certificate and, indeed, as a retired bootmaker at the time of his death. Tom Pocock tells us that Alice actually ran the café, whilst Alfred made footwear and presumably helped out. The Richards family continued to run ‘The Cave’ until at least 1919 and 1 Cheam Road was listed as the address of their son, John Conway, in 1941. Died 12 May 1949 Essex. ‘The Cave’ took boarders and in 1911 one of these was retired schoolmistress Elizabeth Deavin born c.1849 Camberwell, who died the following year; she is commemorated in St Mary’s, Ewell.
