| Occupier in 1911 | London County and Westminster Bank (Manager: Alfred William Oram) |
| Details of 1911 Proprietor | The London County and Westminster Bank was formed from mergers of other banks and eventually was merged into NatWest. According to Kelly’s 1911 Directory, this bank was open only on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 am to 3pm. Mr Oram was also in charge of the Epsom branch and lived in Waterloo Road, Epsom, so I imagine that he merely popped over to Ewell twice a week.
Mr Oram was born in 1861 in South Molton, Devon, son of a wine and spirit merchant cum grocer. By the age of 19 he was a bank clerk in Greenwich and by 1901 he was a bank inspector, living in Lewisham. He married farmer’s daughter Mary Jeffery Howland (1863-1932) in 1890. Children – Philip Adrian (born c.1893, married Nora Ridd) learned farming at Whitemoor Farm in Bishops Tawton, Devon (1911 census) and evidently remained there, for that was still his address when he died in1951. Mary Muriel (1898-1958) married cable engineer William Edmund Brian Barclay and lived at Burgh Heath. Alfred Oram died on 14 December 1933, then living at 2 Temple Road, Epsom. |
