| Details of 1911 Proprietor | In 1911 Epsom-born Lucy Emma Hinckley was 43 years old and described as an employer, so I would guess she used out-workers. She was the only child of William and Lucy. Lucy Senior was with her in 1911, aged 71 and William had died just weeks earlier. William Hinckley, a carpenter, born in Mitcham in about 1839 and learnt his trade at the District Orphan School in Kentish Town; he married gardener’s daughter Lucy Charles, born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, in 1866 at Croydon. Lucy Senior died in 1927, aged 88. Lucy Emma continued in business until at least 1940, after which she moved to Leicestershire, dying there on 11 May 1948. |
| Details of building, where known | I am not entirely sure that this was a shop back in 1911 (it might have been a ‘front room’ operation) but in any event the Hinckley family had been operating businesses in this portion of the High Street since at least 1871, back when it was called Green Man Street. The building was demolished, along with Number 76, in 1963 and a new block was built. |
