State of the Borough – 1958 style
Cover of the 21st Anniversary Programme
In 1958 the Borough of Epsom and Ewell celebrated its first 21 years of being incorporated with various celebrations and an Official 21st Anniversary of Incorporation Programme was published, which cost six (old) pence each. This programme included narrative accounts written by the heads of some of the Borough’s various departments. These accounts provide interesting contemporary views of our area so we have decided to repeat them here:
- Your Own Town in History by John Dent (Borough Librarian)
- Local Government in Epsom and Ewell by Edward Moore (Town Clerk)
- Your Own Town-Its Financial Side by H.A. Loe (Borough Treasurer)
- Operating and Developing the Corporation’s Services by C.G. Cobbett (Borough Engineer)
- Health Conditions in the Borough by Cyrus Ive (Medical officer of Health)
- Water Supply in the Borough by L.D. Evans (Borough Water Engineer) & E.G.H. Gledhill (Sutton District Water Company)
- The Corporation’s Housing Estates by H Laws (Housing Manager)
- The Municipal Baths and Hall by J. Park Smith (Baths Superintendent)
- Epsom Races by Major J.D. Watts (Clerk of the Course)
- Hospital Services in Epsom and Ewell by W.W. Kay (Councillor)
- Youth Service in the Borough by Maurice Young (Chairman Youth Committee)
