Epsom High Street 50 Years Ago (1947 Article)

In 1947, towards the end of his long life all spent in Epsom, the 87 year old Henry William Saunders JP (1860-1949) wrote an article for The Herald – one of the town’s local papers – setting out his memories of the shops and characters of Epsom High Street in about 1900.

A transcript of that article may be read by clicking THIS LINK.

Immediately following that article is the transcript of another press cutting, which is understood to be contemporaneous, reporting on Henry Saunders’ speaking “informingly about the history of Epsom during many years” to the Epsom Rotarians. It may well be that that talk was the trigger for his piece in The Herald.
