Details of 1911 Proprietor Born 1852 Epsom; married 1882 Emily Maria Chuter, born 1858 Epsom, daughter of local builder Thomas Chuter; she died in 1935, then living in Ewell.

Children (all born Epsom) – Gertrude Barnard c.1883-1959 Worthing, unmarried; Elsie Emily c.1885-1946 Redhill, married printer John Edward Kirkland; Reverend Sydney James 1888-1980 Evesham district, initially an engineer, married Elsie Ada Sprague (died 1922) and then Mabel Elizabeth Haist; Winifred 1890-1929 Worthing, unmarried.

James was the son of local grocer William Hailes (died 1855) and his wife Emma (nee Lucock). Emma’ s sister was Elizabeth Lucock, who married William Barnard, and William gave the boy a job in his confectionery business.

Died 27 June 1934, having moved to Leeds.
