Woodcote had been established as a distinct community from time immemorial, beyond the common fields of Epsom and linked back to the parish church by the ‘worple’. Before the dissolution of the monasteries, the manor belonged to Chertsey Abbey: Woodcote Park had been enclosed by the Abbot in 1155 and the Chertsey Cartulary refers to various properties held ‘freely’ to account for the swathe of freehold land extending northwards to the present site of Epsom hospital. Towards the end of the 17th century it was chosen as a location for new houses built for the gentry
We have created this page to help users understand where the grand houses in the Woodcote area were and to provide a jump list to the pages that we have available on this website. It is important to note that the names of some houses have changed more than once and some names have been used for two different properties.
