Arthur Clayton, a respectably-dressed young man, from Accrington, was charged at the Epsom Police Court with stealing three gold rings, one gold chain, one silver brooch, half a sovereign, eight shillings in silver, fifteen three penny pieces, one four penny piece, and sixpence in bronze, the property of Miss Heath, the daughter of the landlord of the Albion Hotel, High Street, Epsom.

Police-constable Trueman, one of the staff of police drafted into Epsom for the race week, stated that he was billeted at the Albion Hotel, and on returning from duty on Derby Day proceeded to his room to change. He was unable to find his trousers, but at last thought he saw them under the bed. Ile proceeded to pull them out, and then found that he had got hold of a man’s leg, and eventually hauled the prisoner from underneath the bed. He asked him what he was doing there, and he replied that he had run away from some men who were knocking him about. He was handed over to the care of another constable. whilst the premises were examined, and it was then found that Miss Heath’s bedroom had been entered, a box broken open, and the articles mentioned in the charge, subsequently found on the prisoner, stolen.

The prisoner now pleaded guilty, and said that he had lost all his money at the races. He had a return ticket to Accrington, ‘but having no money to get from Epsom to London was tempted, and committed the theft. Inquiries had been made, and the chief constable at Accrington reported that the prisoner was an idle, worthless fellow, following no regular employment, and the associate of gamblers and thieves.

He was committed to prison for three months with hard labour.
