EPSOM BUSINESSES 1911
This is one of the properties on the North Side of the East End of the High Street. These were all demolished by the start of World War 11 to enable the road to be widened – for more details see Epsom Heritage Page 5. The new properties were built in a completely different position so unlike the rest of this project it has been decided that it is pointless attempting to give a ‘Current Occupier’ as this would not be applicable.
A further complication is that the buildings were not numbered at the time and have therefore been presented under the owner’s name and as far as possible in sequential order from west to east in line with the 1911 Census and photographic evidence.

(Nee Barker), born 1864 Newnham, Gloucestershire. Husband (married 1886) was William Henry, retired mounted police constable, (c.1858 Moulton Northants-1909, father also a police constable. Found dead at Pound Lane. According to a newspaper report he was discovered in a wood and had bled to death from a razor cut in his arm). Children (all born Epsom) – Mary Ellen Selina (1887-1959), married gardener Charlie Seaman; Henry James (born c.1895), butcher, later caretaker; Ralph Richard (1897-1927), butcher; Mark Victor (1904-63), married Annie Louisa Pratt. Died 11 January 1944, then living at 10 Ladbroke Road. Theodore Bell & Co Solicitors Mr Bell had many strings to his bow, being, among other things, clerk to the Epsom Magistrates and vestry clerk. In 1911 he lived at Downside. Born 1840 Uppingham, Rutland; married 1886 Edith West (c.1853-). Mrs Bell was a portrait painter. No children. Died 4 November 1923, then living at 12 Downside.  Nephew of Theodore Bell; lived Quarry House. Born 1870 Wallasey, Cheshire; married 1903 Nona Capel Loft Holden (1867-1954, then living Wadhurst, Sussex). Child – Sir Arthur Capel Herbert Bell (1904 Epsom-1977), surgeon (obstetrics and gynaecology)at Westminster Hospital, married Hildegarde Anna Elizabeth Faure (died 1986). Died 12 June 1930, still at Quarry House.  |
