| Details of 1911 Proprietor | Having trawled the records for a long time, I conclude that I have either lost my grip or that this man did not know how old he was – by a considerable distance. The enumerator has had a slight tinker with the census form, but should have done so much more.
The enumerator insists that this is the abode of a Mrs Skilton (although she is not there) and JF has listed his relationship as ‘son’, the implication being that the Mrs Skilton who generally occupied/owned the house was his mother. JF says that he is 24, a butcher at home and was born in Ashtead, which surely makes him one of the Skilton Dynasty. The only person he can be is Joseph Frederick (born 1878, so actually 34 in 1911), youngest of the many children of Thomas Skilton Senior, which would make the absent mother Mrs Susannah Harriett Skilton, who was with another son in Croydon. I shall proceed on that basis. However, if you know that he was someone else, please tell us. Born 1878 Ashtead; married 1 October 1913 Croydon widow Ethel Swain (nee Neill, born c.1885 Croydon). Ethel had married draper Arthur Charles Swain in 1907, when she was 21, but he died the following year, aged only 36. Children (all born Epsom) – Gordon Frederick 1914; Eileen J c.1916; Norman William (1918-2000). Died 18 September 1940, then living at Hillbrow, 18 Mill Road. |
