Children – Frances 1872 Leytonstone-1952 unmarried; Edith Mary 1873 Leytonstone-1971 unmarried; Alice Louise 1875 Epsom, married Edward James Morris; Sidney John 1877 Epsom, married Constance Dorothy Bickers; Ethel 1882 Epsom. Had retired by 1913. Died 2 June 1932, then living Chase Rd. His father, John Benton Hales, was a bootmaker and died in 1873; his mother, Sarah Frances (nee Williams), was a toy maker and then a tobacconist (died 1874). In 1871 John was a linen draper in Bermondsey but by 1881 he was back in Epsom as a commercial clerk in drapery, although in 1874 he had been described as a tobacconist, so presumably had taken over the family business as well. |
