War Memorials – Epsom Methodist Church

The brass plaque to three members of the congregation who fell in the Great War was removed at the time the church underwent major renovation around 2005. It was lodged with Bourne Hall Museum and, for several years, was not available for viewing at the church.

Following appeals from the public, the plaque was reinstated in February 2012 and can now again be viewed at the church in Ashley Road.

Throughout the country the majority of Great War memorials show the war years as 1914-1918. However some memorials, like the Epsom Methodist church memorial, show the war years as 1914-1919. The reason for this is explained below.

An armistice was agreed between Germany and the Allies to come into effect at 11am on 11 November 1918. But this was only a truce, an end to fighting but not a formal end to hostilities

Peace was not formally agreed until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919. Therefore, technically the war with Germany did not end until 1919.
