EPSOM BUSINESSES 1911

9 South Street, Epsom
(Controversy Cottages)
Current Occupier (2013) Sew ‘n’ Sew
Tailoring and Alterations
Occupier in 1911 George Phelps
Fruiterer/greengrocer
Details of 1911 Proprietor I am not certain that Mr Phelps had the shop here in 1911 but he did by 1912; in 1911 his address was given as 1 South Street, although I think they meant 1 Ivy Terrace. The numbering in this road is complicated by the fact that the 1911 census enumerator’s book divides it into very small blocks on different pages and it is by no means clear who lived/conducted a business where. A further complication is that at that time Numbers 1-9 South Street were known as Controversy Cottages, which were shops at street level with accommodation on top, and the census has presented them as two different sets of buildings (as does the 1911 street directory). Anyway, Mr Phelps was hereabouts in 1911 and was certainly at this address thereafter.

Born c.1877 Worcester; married 1899 Charlotte Georgina Grinstead (1870-1964, then living Cheam). No children.

In 1901 Mr Phelps had been a domestic gardener living at Woodcote Green; died 19 December 1921, still at 9 South Street.
