Born c.1854 Epsom. Died 3 February 1919, then living at Sutton. Probate was granted to Emily Prior, spinster. In the 1911 census Alfred was described as a widower, the only person with him being Violet Miles Prior, aged 14, domestic servant. Violet was the daughter of Emily Prior, a long-time resident of Sutton, who had a considerable number of children with the second forename of Miles, the eldest being called Alfred. If Mr Miles was indeed a widower in 1911, it appears that his wife was called Mary and that she died in Epsom in 1910, aged 46: the only person I can find to fit the bill in the 1901 census is a Mrs Mary Miles, born c. 1863 Mitcham, living in Adelphi Road with a son called Alfred S (Stanley) Miles, born 1896 (Alfred Senior, described as married, was with a brother in Epsom High Street). Miss Prior was still having children with the second forename of Miles up to 1902 and probably died in 1942. In 1911 Alfred Stanley was a butcher’s assistant, boarding in Hook Road, and I can find no definite trace of him thereafter.

So, on the presumption that the young Priors (all born in Sutton) belonged to Mr Miles, they were Alfred Miles (c.1886), married Kate Sloper; Nellie (1888), married Horace Ernest Vincent Arthur, emigrated to Washtenaw, Michigan, USA; Sidney Miles (1890-1967); Bertie Percival Miles (1892); Edward Miles (1894); Violet Miles (c.1897); Daisy Miles (1899); Dorothy Miles (1902).
