Eliza and her mother look to have had a hard life. Mr William Walters died in 1845, leaving his wife, Louisa, with at least four children, of whom Eliza was the youngest (another child came along two or three years after Mr Walters died). At the age of 15 Eliza was a servant on a farm and her mother was a charwoman. In 1871 Louisa was a charwoman and Eliza was back at home suffering from abscesses, which had afflicted her since the age of two. By 1881 Louisa was blind in one eye and presumably retired, whilst Eliza was charring. Louisa died in 1887. By 1891 Eliza’s widowed sister, Lucy Horley, had set up a tobacconist’s shop in the cottage at Number 14 and Eliza was describing herself as a nurse (I think she was probably child-minding, as there had been a one-year-old there ten years previously). Then Lucy died in 1899, so Eliza became a confectioner and took in boarders (there were three in 1901 and she had only four rooms, so one can imagine that the income was crucial) and this remained the case up to 1911.
