| Details of 1911 Proprietors | Albert Edward Wyeth GrocerLike so many of the Epsom businesses, Wyeths was a family concern, starting with William Wyeth (born c.1832 Brentford, Middlesex): he married in 1854 Mary Ann Matilda Rutter (c.1838-1905, then living West Hill). They had tried life in Sydney and Brentford before settling in Epsom.Children – Joseph Henry (c.1862 Sydney); Clara Sims (c.1864 Sydney-1885, unmarried); Mary Elizabeth (c.1866 Brentford-1953, unmarried); Ada Eva (1868 Brentford-1912), married local baker John George Woods; Marian (c.1871 Epsom); Percy William (1870 Epsom – believed to have died at Norfolk Island on 9 August 1890) – there is a grave on Norfolk Island, a small island in the Pacific now belonging to Australia, which matches; William Thomas (1872 Epsom – fate not known but quite possibly emigrated); Frederick George (1875 Epsom); John James (1877 Epsom-1879 Epsom); Albert Edward (c.1879 Epsom).It was William who first had the grocery shop on Albion Terrace and when he died on 3 October 1897 Albert took over. Joseph Henry had also been a grocer, with premises in East Street, but he then temporarily became a builder, before deciding in the 1911 census that he was a retired grocer. Frederick George was in the grocery trade too (you will see the name of Wyeth Brothers over the shop in the picture).We may as well deal with Joseph Henry here for the sake of completeness. On 2 April 1883 at Christ Church, Epsom he married local builder’s daughter Harriett Annie Gray and this is possibly how he eventually came to take up building. However, in 1891 he was a master grocer at 6 East Street. He died on 1 January 1949, then living in Alexandra Road, Harriett having predeceased him in 1943. Their children, all born in Epsom, were Joseph Henry (c.1884-1960), architect and surveyor, married Clemence Lilian Molin (divorced) and then Margaret Mary Winchester Douglas; Clara Dorothy (1886-1963?), married William John Marlow; William Jonathan (1887-1974), married Edith Isabel Davidson; Florence Ruth (1889-91); Frank Percy (1891-1944), master mariner Merchant Service, married Dorothy Dixon Corbett; Allen Frederick (1896-1915, killed in action); Robert John (1900-53, married Emily Frances Helen Payne) – he had been blind from birth. Joseph died on 1 January 1949, then living in Alexandra Road.  Joseph Henry Wyeth Senior outside his shop in East Street Image courtesy of Bourne Hall Museum By 1911 Frederick George had a grocer’s shop in Godalming, the partnership in the Albion Terrace shop having been dissolved in 1901; he married Epsom builder’s daughter Eva Grace Harding (1874- 1960) on 17 February 1902 at Christ Church. They do not seem to have had any children. Frederick died on 26 September 1925, then living Farncombe, Surrey. So, that left Albert Edward running the shop on Albion Terrace. On 13 April 1903 at Christ Church he married Alice Wiltshire (born c.1880 Epsom), daughter of East Street timber merchant William Wiltshire. Alice died at the age of just 31 and was buried in Epsom Cemetery on 5 January 1912. I think that Albert remarried but am not certain. Children (both born Epsom) – Mary Margaret (1904-18); Dorothy May (1906-2000), married Joseph Bernard Cornwell. Died 1944 Yarmouth district, Norfolk.
