Born c.1870 Maida Vale; married 1892 Caroline Charlotte Shrubsole (he divorced her on the grounds of her adultery with one Mat Forde); she remarried 1910 Charles Stuart Hamilton Robarts. Mr Tanton then married in 1907 Mary Ann Mallons or Mallows (born c.1881 – she remarried 1922 Richard A Morgan).

Children – from 1st marriage, Arthur Ransley, born 1895 Epsom (with his paternal grandmother in 1911), probably emigrated to Western Australia as a fruit farmer; from 2nd marriage, Mary Elizabeth (1909 Epsom-1995), unmarried.

Died 31 May 1921, still at The King’s Head.

Formerly a turf commission agent; son of local nurseryman Joseph Ransley Tanton (died 1878), who gardened at Childerplat in East Street and was responsible for the landscaping of Epsom Cemetery. Charles’s sister, Helen, married Arthur Barnard.

This establishment had been trading since the 17th century and was demolished in 1957: part of the Ashley Centre is now on the site.
